James Purefoy, Thomas Haden Church, and Mark Strong have all been confirmed as having joined the cast of “John Carter of Mars”, an adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs fantasy space books. Andrew Stanton is directing the project for Disney.

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins headline “John Carter Of Mars”, which centers on a Civil War veteran who finds himself mysteriously transported to the planet Mars, where he becomes embroiled in a war raging between various civilizations on the red planet.

Kitsch is cast as the titular role, with Collins as the Princess of Helium. Church is slotted to play the alien Thark warrior Tal Hajus. Purefoy is playing Kantos Kan, the captain of the warship Xavarian, of the kingdom of Helium, and Strong is Matai Shang, the ruler of the almost godlike Thems. Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, and Polly Walker are also rounding out the cast.

Disney is planning a tentative summer of 2012 release for the film.
