Angelina Jolie and Darren Aronofsky are in talks to develop a big-screen adaptation of Ron Rash’s 2008 period novel “Serena: A Novel,” with Jolie starring and Aronofsky directing.

Chris Kyle (“The Weight of Water”, “K-19: The Widowmaker”) wrote the screenplay, and Nick Wechsler is set to produce.

Set in 1929 North Carolina, “Serena” tells the tale of George Pemberton and his new bride, Serena, who set about building a timber empire. Serena becomes a behind-the-scenes player in pushing her husband to be more and more ruthless, and when she learns she cannot bear children, sets out to murder her husband’s illegitimate son he had with another woman in vengeance.

The project is currently seeking backers and distribution.
