Sebastian Stan (NBC’s “Kings” & the CW’s “Gossip Girl”) has been announces as having been cast as Bucky Barnes in the upcoming Captain America movie.

Stan joins Chris Evans, who is playing the eponymous American Flag-themed WW2 superhero., one of many whom originally tested for the lead role in Marvel’s The First Avenger: Captain America, has been cast as Bucky Barnes, Cap’s sidekick to the previously-announced Chris Evans.

Bucky Barnes was first introduced in “Captain America Comics” #1 in 1941, published by Marvel Comics’ predecessor Timely Comics. A young man and orphan, he discovers that clumsy Army Private Steve Rodgers is actually the costumed, shield-wielding hero known as Captain America, assisting US forces during World War 2. Barnes dons a costume and becomes Captain America’s teenage sidekick. He was subsequently killed while trying to defuse the exploding rocket that also supposedly killed Captain America.

Barnes reappeared in Marvel Comics’ titles in 2005, having been revealed as not dead, but frozen, captured, and then brainwashed by the USSR and turned into the cyborg assassin known as The Winter Soldier before being rescued by Captain America.

Joe Johnston is directing “The First Avenger: Captain America”, which is slated to begin filming in Europe over the summer.

The film is set to hit theaters July 22nd, 2011.
