The first poster for The Social Network has arrived and it’s – strange. I’m a huge Jesse Eisenberg fan and just about everything he’s delivered over the past few years has gotten my instant approval, but this poster portrait just doesn’t work at all.

That gigantic tagline is weak to begin with, but for the people who aren’t aware that Eisenberg is starring in a film as Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, how are they supposed to know what this advertisement is for? The film’s title is reduced to a tiny font and stuffed on the right side of the poster in what is supposed to resemble the Facebook browser bar.

What’s so disappointing about this image is that there were so many more creative options. Why not design it like a personal Facebook page? Yes, it may be a little too obvious, but it would still make for a far more visually appealing and telling poster. It could be Zuckerberg’s page with Eisenberg’s face and include some of the other cast members like Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield, Joe Mazzello and Rashida Jones as his friends. Plus, the tagline could make for an excellent status update.

Oh well, this is what we got.

  1. I think it’s a terrific teaser poster. It draws people’s attention and they are more inclined to actually investigate what the movie is. This is just the first poster anyway, so I’m sure more posters with all the movie/cast details will be released closer to the release date.
