A few days ago, I speculated that the “Avengers” role a lot of Hollywood starlets were vying for would be for the Wasp. Well, enough speculation, as we now have some definite answers!

According to Newsarama via Variety, Colbie Smulders has been cast as Agent Maria Hill in “The Avengers”.  A bit of backstory on the character: Maria Hill, according to Newsarama, was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Finch. She first appeared in New Avengers #4 and later became the interim executive of S.H.I.E.L.D. during the Marvel Comics event “Civil War”.

After refreshing myself with the look of the character, I can see why a lot of people in the blogosphere where thinking that Marvel was casting for the Wasp, as Maria and Janet van Dyne do have a lot of aesthetic similarities.

Smulders has been on writer/director Joss Whedon’s radar for a while now; she was originally shortlisted for the “Wonder Woman” film project when Whedon was attached to the film.

“The Avengers” will follow the exploits of the team of superheroes led by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Also starring Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Lou Ferrigno, Tom Huddleston, Clark Cregg and Robin Atkin Downes, “The Avengers” will be in theaters May 4, 2012.
