If you’re a fan of Pixar’s “Cars”, then you might be excited to hear that DisneyToon Studios is set to make their own film starring transportation, according to ScreenCrave.

Titled “Planes”, the film will take many cues from “Cars” and, according to the press release, feature many daredevil characters, action, and “hilarious” humor. It is set to be released on Blu-Ray and DVD Spring 2013.

This blogger happens to be a Pixar purist, so whenever Disney delves into 3D animation, I get a little scared. Yes, I’ve heard good things about “Meet the Robinsons”, at least as far as its stylistic qualities, and “Chicken Little”, but on the whole Disney’s forays into 3D have been less than stellar. In any case, they certainly don’t compare to Pixar’s films.

Also, to make “Planes” sounds like they’re ripping off “Cars.” Yes, Pixar and Disney are part of the same company now, but still, there’s no guarantee that the same crew who worked on “Cars” will work on “Planes”, and there’s certainly no guarantee about the story, which leads me to my next fear.

This film is another in a string of direct-to-DVD films from Disney. Ironically, John Lasseter, who took over animation control of Disney, stated at one point that direct-to-DVD sequels to classics like “Mulan”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Tarzan”, etc. would stop right after a certain point. Now, perhaps films like “Beverly Hills Chihuahua  2” was greenlit long before Lasseter took his post at Disney, but where’s the excuse for “Planes”?

But for all of my kvetching, “Planes” could actually be a good film. What do you think?
