In honor of this year’s Earth Day, Google has launched a “magical woodland” Doodle. The animated image features pandas, penguins, a lion and a flowing waterfall in a forest. Google users can click on the Doodle, which replaces the Google logo on the search engine’s home page, to bring up a series of articles about Earth Day.

Earth Day was launched in 1970 by Wisconsin Democratic senator Gaylord Nelson to encourage people to become aware of, and appreciate, the environment. It’s also supposed to inspire people to “fight against man’s exploitative relationship with the planet.”

Earth Day also acts as a campaign to encourage people around the world to perform environmental services. The original Earth Day acted as a model for modern green coalitions.
