Seven-year-old Monte Verde Elementary School student Matteo Lopez has been selected by Google as the U.S. winner of this year’s Doodle 4 Google content. The San Francisco student created a Doodle that he titled “Space Life,” which depicts a trip to space, walking on the moon and an alien encounter in marker and colored pencil. Lopez said he created the Doodle, which will replace the traditional Google logo on the search engine’s home page on May 20, because his dream is to “become an astronaut and explore space life.”

Lopez’s design beat out over 107,000 submissions, and received over five million votes. Besides featuring his Doodle on its homepage, Google also awarded Lopez with a computer, a $15,000 college scholarship and a $25,000 technology grant for Monte Verde.

Additional winners include Wilmington, N.C. forth grade student Joseph Eugene Miller in the Grades 4-6 category for his Doodle titled “My Galaxy.” Justas Varpucanskism, a seventh grade student from Mokena, Ill., won the Grades 7-9 category for his design “The Magestic Sea.” Fayetteville, Ark. eleventh grade student Hannah Newsom won the Grades 10-12 category for her design “Illustration.” Additional information about the winners and the contest can be found at the Doodle 4 Google website.
