The next highest-grossing film of the weekend was also a sequel–“Kung Fu Panda 2”. “Kung Fu Panda 2” has already grossed $68,000,000 and was rated 80% by critics and 87% by audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Here’s a taste of what the critics had to say:

“Kung Fu Panda 2 brings back nearly the entire cast of characters from the first movie but, instead of recycling the original storyline, screenwriters Jonathan Aibel & Glenn Burger and first-time director Jennifer Yuh use this opportunity to expand the main character’s back story and explore some dark corners and crevices of the world in which these talking animals exist. “–James Berardinelli, ReelViews

“Hardly a scene goes by that isn’t visually striking or kinetically thrilling, and all of it enhanced by 3-D.”–Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal

“”Kung Fu Panda 2″ is a ghastly sequel to a charming animated film, though it may take a few minutes for the bad news to sink in.”–Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

“If you enjoyed the first KFP, it will be impossible not to like this one. In fact, I enjoyed this more than the original. I can’t say that about many sequels…Pixar will have a tough time owning the best animated movie this year with Kung Fu Panda 2 and Rango in the mix.”–Jeff Bayer, The Scorecard Review
