According to CinemaBlend via Variety, Kodi Smit-McPhee (“Let Me In”, “The Road”) has been cast in the indie reboot/remake of the classic Shakespeare play, “Romeo and Juliet”. Smit-McPhee will play Benvolio, the person who tries to stop the feud between the Montagues and Capulets.

Right now, the cast consists of Ed Westwick as Juliet’s cousin Tybalt, Holly Hunter as Juliet’s nurse, and Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet herself.

Thus far, a Romeo hasn’t been found. I can’t think of who they could cast aside from an unknown. The only other idea I would have is to cast Freddie Highmore. I don’t know.

The film is being helmed by Carlo Carlei and is being produced by director Gabriele Muccino and screenwriter Julian Fellowes. Filming starts this summer in Italy.

Since I think Freddie Highmore might be too old for this role, I’ll leave this “Romeo” conundrum to you? What young actor do you think is worthy of the role of Romeo? Do you think Smit-McPhee should have been cast as Romeo? Are you interested in seeing yet another take on the Shakespeare play, even if it does sound like this version will be authentic to the original time and setting?
