The folks at Movieline are wishing visionary director Tim Burton a happy 53rd birthday. The quirky director has created and re-imagined some very memorable characters over the years, and Movieline asks its readers which one is their favorite.

The list Movieline has compiled includes Pee Wee Herman, Beetlejuice, The Joker and Catwoman from “Batman”, Edward Scissorhands, Jack Skellington from “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, Ed Wood, Edward Bloom from “Big Fish”, Ichabod Crane from “Sleepy Hollow”, Willy Wonka, Victor from “Corpse Bride”, Mrs. Lovett from “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” and the Mad Hatter from “Alice in Wonderland”, but we have to include Sweeney Todd, the ape characters Ari, Thade, Attar, and Limbo from “Planet of the Apes” (yes, we have to include them) Alice and the Red and White Queens from “Alice in Wonderland”and Frankenweenie.

It’s hard to choose my favorite Tim Burton character (as long as they aren’t apes), but most of my favorite characters have been played by Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. Beetlejuice is high up there as well. If I had to choose one, I’d pick Edward Scissorhands. He’s a really sweet and tragic character, and Depp brings a lot of heart to a role that could have been easily mucked up.
