Having read “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” I know that Hunter S. Thompson is a bit wacky. Well, “wacky” is an understatement. So if “The Rum Diary” is anything like “Fear and Loathing,” then the movie adaptation of “The Rum Diary” is going to be crazy!

The film adaptation was developed by Johnny Depp, Thompson’s friend, as well as Depp’s production company Infinitum Nihil. The book, set in the 1950s, written in the 1960s, but published in 1998, is about a journalist who moves from New York at a newspaper in Puerto Rico. The book reflects Thompson’s own life because he went to Puerto Rico from New York to write for a newspaper as well.

Aside from Depp starring as the title character, Paul Kemp, the film stars Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi, Richard Jenkins, Amaury Nolasco, Karen Austin, Marshall Bell and Michael Rispoli.

You can view the trailer (which includes a scary, tripped-out looking Depp) below. And, it looks like there’s the right amount of drinking, drugs and hallucination for movie based on a Thompson book. Lots and lots of debauchery.
