After a Good Samaritan tried to stop a California man from assaulting a woman, the suspect embarked on a shooting spree that killed a three-year-old girl and critically wounded a pregnant woman and another child, the Los Angeles Times is reporting. San Bernardino Police Chief Keith Kilmer confirmed that both children were shot in the head, while the five month pregnant woman was shot in the neck and jaw.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, opened fire on the front patio of a home, and then fled down the street on foot. While police spokeswoman Lt. Gwendolyn Waters has said that officers have responded to several incidents at the home over the past few years, the shooting doesn’t appear to be related to any previous incidents.

Mayor Patrick Morris is asking residents to help with the investigation, as police believe there are witnesses to the shootings. The incident occurred during the evening of September 12, six blocks from the San Bernardino Police Department.
