Maryland police are searching for a missing 11-year-old boy after his step-father was arrested for killing his mother and charged with first-degree murder, FOX News is reporting. The boy lived with his mother, Jane McQuain, but wasn’t home when officers arrived at the scene. She was found dead in the bedroom of her Germantown condominium during the evening of October 12.

McQuain’s husband, Curtis Lopez, was taken into custody around 9:30 am the following morning as he was leaving an EconoLodge in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, McQuain’s son, William, hasn’t been seen since September 30.

Montogmery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said “Our priority, our focus right now is to locate William (McQuain). We were hoping that we would find him with Mr. Lopez, but we did not.” Maryland State Police have issued an Amber Alert to for William.

McQuain’s body was discovered after an acquaintance called police earlier in the day and said she hadn’t been heard from in about two weeks. Manger said it’s unknown at this time when she was killed, but it could have been as early as October 1 or 2. Lopez is believed to have taken part in the murder, as he gave police inconsistent statements.

Police haven’t revealed information about McQuain’s death besides saying her body suffered trauma. They’re waiting to release more information until they receive the autopsy results. It’s not known yet when Lopez will return to Maryland to face charges.
