Did Real Steel stir a desire for more inspirational sports movies? Well, you’re in luck because The Mighty Macs is due out in theaters on October 21st and while it’s certainly lacking in the futuristic boxing robot department, it’s got quite the asset to fill the void – a true story.

Based on Immaculata University’s 1971 women’s basketball team, The Mighty Macs features Carla Gugino as the team’s coach, Cathy Rush. While her husband, Ed (David Boreanaz), keeps busy with his NBA refereeing gig, Cathy decides to make use of her time by coaching Immaculata’s failing basketball team. Without a gym, uniforms and funding, Cathy certainly has her work cut out for her, but, true to history, she motivates the girls to work hard enough to defy the odds and become a skilled team.

With the film’s release on the horizon, Gugino and Boreanaz took the time to give everyone a taste of what’s to come, dishing on everything from their stellar co-cast, including Marley Shelton and Ellen Burstyn, to working with first-time director Tim Chambers, collaborating with the real Cathy Rush and much more. Check it all out for yourself in the video interview below.
