I remember when “Captain Underpants” first came out: I was in elementary school, and I assumed they were for boys only. Soon, there will be an animated feature based on the series of books by Dav Pilkey by Dreamworks Animation, so eventually, we’ll see if they think the books are for boys only, too.

Deadline is reporting that Dreamworks Animation has won the auction for the feature film rights to the eight-volume book series. The books are about George Beard and Harold Hutchins, two fourth grade boys who want to stick it to their terrible principal, Mr. Benny Krupp. The two hypnotize their principal and make him into superhero Captain Underpants, who helps children out of their various predicaments. When the principal’s hypnotism wears off, he never remembers the antics he’s been up to.

According to the article, Dreamworks Animation and their creative officer have wanted to get their hands on this since 1997, so I’m sure they’re finally glad to have their feature film rights. I wonder how they will treat this book series–will they traditionally animate it or are they going to go the 3D route? I would prefer it if they did the movie series (because you know it’s going to be a series) in traditional 2D. I think 3D could ruin the effect the distinctive cartooning has. But I’m no entertainment bigwig.
