Remember the awesome 1990s computer game and television show, “Where In The World is Carmen Sandiego”? Well, Jennifer Lopez and Walden Media see some movie potential in the property.

According to Deadline, Walden Media has acquired the rights to “Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?” in order to turn it into a live-action film. According to the article, Walden Media is planning on developing “Carmen Sandiego” in order for Lopez to play Carmen herself, but for now, Walden Media has stated she is currently only in a producing role, along with her partners at Nuyorican Productions, Benny Media and Simon Fields as well as Nick Osbourne, Devin Andre and Trevor Engelson and from Underground Films.

According to the article, the intention is for the “Carmen Sandiego” property to be a film like “National Treasure” crossed with “The Thomas Crown Affair,” and the synopsis, according to the logline, involves Sandiego, who was ACME Agency’s greatest detective, becoming the greatest thief in the world. Now that she’s gone rogue, it’s up to her former partner to follow the clues she leaves behind and find her. However, as the partner tracks Sandiego, he’s faced with the question as to whether Sandiego is villain or a hero.

I’ve often wondered why there hasn’t been talk of a “Carmen Sandiego” movie before, because if “The Smurfs” can get made, any obscure kids show can be turned into a film. But aside from “Sandiego” being a tad obscure to younger audiences today, the franchise is a well-developed piece of educational fun that is still engaging today (if your old games still work on your computer, of course). Also, since the film is going to be like “The Thomas Crown Affair,” how adult is this film going to be? I suppose it can’t be too adult, seeing it’s based on a children’s game after all, but the film sounds like it’s going to be fairly grown-up in tone.
