The Hollywood Reporter has the exclusive on M. Night Shyamalan’s science-fiction film “1000 A.E.”
According to the site, Zoe Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo are in early talks to join the cast of the film, which already has Will Smith and his son, Jaden, signed on.

If Kravitz and Okonedo officially join the cast, Kravitz will play the role of Smith’s daughter and Okonedo will play Smith’s wife.

“1000 A.E.” tells the story of an Earth that is no longer hospitable to human life. Smith is a hero, and his son is, sadly, considered a failure. When they happen to crash-land on the desolate terrain of Earth, the roles reverse, and it turns out that it’s up to the son to become the hero in order to save his father.

Overall, this cast sounds promising. As an “Avatar: The Last Airbender” fan, I’m still irked at Shyamalan for the massive murder he did to the show’s characters with the film “The Last Airbender,” but I do think this film could be poised as Shyamalan’s big comeback to film. Also, it’s good to see a people-of-color cast, something that’s not as common as it should be in Hollywood. Couple that with a person-of-color director (even with his shameful “Airbender” fiasco), and this is giving me good feelings as far as cultural politics go.

Also, with people like the Smith family in this film, “1000 A.E.” is bound to be a success. I don’t know any film in which Smith wasn’t likeable at some level. And Jaden just seems to be following in the Smith mold of likability and charisma.
