Andrew Garfield sat down with MTV’s Josh Horowitz about “The Amazing Spider-Man.”

It’s been said many times that “The Amazing Spider-Man” is in no way trying to replace the Tobey Maguire/Sam Raimi version of the iconic comic book story. Garfield echoed that sentiment. “I was so excited to see it I got a pirated copy,” he said, going on to say that for him, Tobey Maguire was the true Spider-Man for so long.”

Garfield said he came to the role understanding that he, like Peter Parker, had a great responsibility. “I approached the role like any fan would–with real reverence and terror,” he said. “I think that’s what being a fan is that there’s no separation between you and him.”

Gwen Stacy, portrayed by Emma Stone, is, for this film, the only girl in Peter’s life. “Gwen is Peter’s first love. And I can’t speak past that because that’s where we are,” said Garfield. “Peter’s in love for the first time.”

Garfield also cleared up the rumor that Spider-Man appears in “The Avengers.” “I didn’t get that call,” he said, clearly showing he’d only heard of the rumor during the interview. “Maybe I just haven’t been answering the phone.”
