“Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds” is automatically a box office winner. Every Tyler Perry movie is; his empire is almost like Pixar’s in that way. Also, like Pixar, he has a devout following who cherish everything he makes. However, that devout following does not extend into the Land of Movie Critics.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, “Good Deeds” leaves a lot to be desired for the critics, who have rated it at 29%. This low number is counterbalanced by the audience’s very high 81%.

It would seem the critics hated the film because of the predictable storyline, the slogging way in which it’s presented and the fact that it’s a bit one note. The critics have admitted that there are points in which the film does have the gravitas its going for, but those moments are surrounded by boring scenes.

Another bright spot is Thandie Newton. According to Owen Gleiberman for Entertainment Weekly, “Good Deeds, with its Frank Capra-gone-Good Will Hunting title, is lucky to have Thandie Newton, easily the most gifted actress ever to have starred in a Tyler Perry movie.”
