Here we go; the summer movie season begins with The Avengers! How big will it be? Thor opened with $65.7 million, Captain America: The First Avenger with $65.1 and Iron Man with $98.6 million. No, it’s not as simple as adding it up and saying the more superheroes, the more money, but, well, that somewhat is the case. Marvel has undoubtedly built a strong following over the years and those moviegoers will be out in full force to support the ultimate in superhero movies, perhaps letting The Avengers crack the $150 million mark.

As for the old timers, they’ll all trail far behind, but with only The Avengers entering the ring, most should hold on relatively strong. Think Like a Man might lessen its drop from 47.7% to about 40%, which would give it another $10 million while The Pirates! Band of Misfits looks to hold onto younger moviegoers, perhaps only dropping 35% for a $7 million weekend two total. The Hunger Games has dropped minimally from weekend to weekend and that certainly won’t change now, the megahit potentially only losing 40% of its weekend six profits for a total of $6.5 million this time around.

The Lucky One might very well lose the fifth spot to The Five-Year Engagement should it take another hefty hit. It won’t lose half of its profits this time, but it could still see a 45% loss, which would give it just under $6 million while positive word of mouth could give The Five-Year Engagement another $6.5 million. Safe on the other hand could suffer a slash in half, as could The Raven, which would leave both with just about $4 million for their second weekends out. Should Chimpanzee drop just 45%, it’ll follow right behind with $3 million. The Three Stooges has more than enough of a lead on The Cabin in the Woods to secure the 10th position, even if its weekend three profits are slashed in half for a total of $2.5 million.
