Magnolia Pictures has acquired the American rights to Terrence Malick’s upcoming romance drama ‘To The Wonder,’ which premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month. The film, which stars Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem, reunites the Academy Award-nominated director with producers Sarah Green and Nicolas Gonda, as well as cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki.

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia’s SVP of Acquisitions, Dori Begley, and CAA, on behalf of the filmmakers. The distribution company plans on releasing ‘To The Wonder’ theatrically next year.

‘To The Wonder’ follows Marina, played by Kurylenko, and Neil, portrayed by Affleck, who meet in France and move to Oklahoma to start a life together. However, problems soon start to arise, as Marina makes the acquaintance of a priest and fellow exile, Father Quintana, played by Bardem, who is struggling with his vocation. Meanwhile, Neil renews a relationship with a childhood sweetheart, Jane, portrayed by McAdams.

After squiring ‘To The Wonder,’ Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles said “It is an honor and a dream come true to be working with Terrence Malick, one of our greatest living filmmakers. To The Wonder’ is a romantic, haunting and beautiful film that will be endlessly rewarding for movie lovers.”

Gonda and Green also expressed excitement over the deal, saying they’re happy to be partnering with Magnolia. They said the distribution company “has become a destination for the work of some of the world’s most innovative and talented directors, and we are proud to align with this forward-thinking team.”
