Filming on ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ was in full swing yesterday in San Francisco’s North Beach, the Little Italy of the City by the Bay, Comic Book Movie is reporting. Actors from the sci-fi action drama, which is the sequel to 2011’s hit ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes,’ were seen running down a desolate street wearing motion-capture costumes.

‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ is being directed by ‘Cloverfield’ helmer Matt Reeves, and is based on a screenplay written by Mark Bomback, Scott Z. Burns, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The movie, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 23, 2014, stars Andy Serkis, who’s reprising his role of Caesar from the first film, as well as Gary Oldman, Keri Russel, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Judy Greer.

20th Century Fox, the studio releasing the film, has released the following synopsis for ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’:

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
