One of the highest grossing films of 2010, “Disney’s Alice In Wonderland,” is getting a sequel with the film’s stars now on board. According to THR, Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska have signed on for “Disney’s Alice In Wonderland 2.” Although director Tim Burton (“Frankenweenie”) directed the first live-action Disney film, now director James Bobin (“The Muppets,” “The Flight of the Conchords”) will take the helm with the sequel film.

“Disney’s Alice In Wonderland” grossed $1.5 billion worldwide, as it sits at the #2 spot, with Pixar’s “Toy Story 3” firmly at #1 with $1.6 billion on the highest grossing movies of 2010 list. Disney also announced the release date for the “Alice” sequel film, which will open on Memorial Day weekend in 2016. It’s interesting to note that the first “Alice in Wonderland” modern live-action feature film opened in March 2010. So it seems that Disney has more confidence in its sequel with an aggressive start of summer 2016 release date.

Disney also made the announcement that the “Jungle Book” live-action adaptation will hit theaters in October 2015. Director Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”) will take the helm of the new Disney film.

“Disney’s Alice In Wonderland” will hit theaters everywhere on May 27, 2016, in 3D, while “Disney’s The Jungle Book” will hit theaters on October 9, 2015, in 3D as well.
