Female independence and activism takes on diverse meanings in different societies around the world. While Americans are celebrating feminism recently, now more than ever before, particularly with the help of women leaders in Hollywood, not every country is as accepting of the movement. That lack of support can be seen in the new documentary, ‘Act & Punishment,’ which is being released today on VOD by Cleopatra Entertainment.

In honor of the distribution, ShockYa is premiering an exclusive clip from ‘Act & Punishment.’ The movie, which will also be released on DVD on February 13, was written and directed by Yevgeni Mitta. The film features several Pussy Riot members, including Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich.

The documentary follows members of the Russian all-girl punk rock band, Pussy Riot, who are also known for their controversial activism. The group is standing trial for publicly expressing their ideas of female independence and activism. The band stood up to government human rights oppression in the country, and paid the ultimate price with their incarceration in 2011. The women were later released from prison the following year. ‘Act & Punishment’ also covers their evolution from mere political activists through their formation of a punk rock band that was destined to bring their message of revolution to the masses and beyond.
