Ain’t It Cool News is reporting that there are rumblings of a possible sequel to the 2007 adaptation of the classic, post-apocalyptic 1954 Richard Matheson novel starring Will Smith.

Though there is no official confirmation, AICN is indicating that a source has told them that the previously-rumored prequel to the movie, which depicts Smith as the last man alive on Earth, fighting and surviving against hordes of mutated, vampire-like creatures created by a plague, and searching for other signs of humanity. The movie updates the book’s story by making Smith a military scientist who is actually indirectly responsible for the plague. AICN’s source writes;

“Let’s start at the beginning. Smith is actually the one who developed the initial story. It took place several years before the original film and there were still pockets of survivors and the story centered around Smith interacting, bonding, and ultimately failing to save them. For months this was the story. Warner’s didn’t much care for it and Smith and (writer DB Weiss) eventually came on board and all parties agreed to change things up. Well this change is pretty insane, the film is no longer a prequel, it’s a fucking sequel!”

AICN notes the sheer impossibility of such a situation due to the death of Smith’s character in the movie, though they also note that such a situation is not something that would necessarily stop a studio attempt at creation of such a project.
