Finally confirming rumors, Fox has confirmed that fresh off the opening-weekend success of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” development has started for a solo spinoff featuring the fan-favorite character Deadpool, the nonstop-joking, sword-swinging mercenary portrayed in the film by Ryan Reynolds.

Reynolds is attached to reprise the character in what is being called “Deadpool.” Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel Studios would act as producers, and the studio is seeking writers.

Deadpool is known as “the merc with a mouth,” a character that first debuted in “New Mutants” in 1991. A wise-cracking mercenary with superhuman healing powers, he gradually gained a cult following of his own through several solo series and appearances in other titles, where the character, a washout from the same Weapon X project that gave Wolverine his metal claws, developed his propensity to break the fourth wall and non-stop joking.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Fox considered a “Deadpool” spinoff early in “Wolverine’s” development , hence casting Reynolds in the role and the actor being brought back in the month before the movie’s release to shoot one of two “Easter egg” post-credits scenes revealing that the character was still alive after “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”‘s climactic battle.
