The Social Network marketing campaign is growing on me. The headshot with text poster was a curious start, but with the release of the unusually constructed yet alluring teaser trailer, it became easier to appreciate Columbia Pictures’ approach. Now they’ve sent another teaser trailer our way and while it’s far more telling and visually stimulating than the first, it’s still rather cryptic.
The video is basically a cast-wide chat via Facebook status updates. Most of the material comes from Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, the man who started it all. Andrew Garfield chimes in as Eduardo Saverin, a pal of Zuckerberg’s who helped in the earlier stages of the site’s development, as does Joseph Mazzello as Dustin Moskovitz, another member of the original team. Rashida Jones makes an appearance as Marylin Delpy as does Rooney Mara as Erica Albright, both characters I assume to be fictional or perhaps just based on real people. Things get heated when Max Minghella steps in as the guy who sued Facebook, Divya Narendra. Brenda Song pops up at a point as a character named Christy Lee and then we get a glimpse of Josh Pence as Tyler Winklevoss, one of the guys who accused Zuckerberg of stealing ideas along with Narendra. From there we get Douglas Urbanski as Harvard president Larry Summers and Justin Timberlake as Napster co-founder Sean Parker.
Along with this new teaser trailer came the news that The Social Network was chosen as the Opening Night film for the 48th Annual New York Film Festival. The film’s official release isn’t until October 1st, but those attending the festival will have the opportunity to catch it when it plays on September 24th at Alice Tully Hall.
