Greetings Twihards, Twifans, Twilight Moms, Team Edward, Team Jacob and Team Switzerland,

I just want to say hello to all of you and let you know that I’m stoked to be getting underway on the adventure of making BREAKING DAWN. As you’ve probably heard, I’ve been given a very warm welcome by Stephenie and Team Summit – who are super-focused, as you know, on getting these movies right.

I’m pretty busy bringing myself up to speed on what you already know by heart: I’ve read BREAKING DAWN twice, rewatched Catherine’s and Chris’s movies 2-3 times each, have all four CDs playing in my car, and have Catherine’s notebook, Mark Cotta Vaz’s companion books, and even Volume 1 of the graphic novel here on my desk – a corner of my office is starting to look like Hot Topic. I realize that this barely qualifies me for “newborn” status in the universe you’ve been living inside for a few years now, but a guy’s gotta start somewhere.

Like many of you, I’ve always been slightly obsessed with vampires, dating back to the prime-time series DARK SHADOWS, which I followed avidly as a kid. But that alone hadn’t been enough to get me interested in making a vampire movie, even though my early screenwriting and directing efforts grew out of a great love for horror movies and thrillers. Since making GODS AND MONSTERS thirteen years ago, however, I’ve been yearning for a return to a story with Gothic overtones.

The wonderful world that Stephenie has created has obviously struck a chord with you, and I don’t think it’s difficult to see why. For me, her characters are simultaneously timeless, yet very modern. Rooted in a beautiful, real landscape with a great sense of place, Bella, Edward, Jacob, and the rest of the Forks/La Push menagerie, experience emotions that are primal, and universal: desire, despair, jealousy – and it all comes to fruition in BREAKING DAWN. This is a final chapter in the best sense; not just wide in scope and scale, but emotionally charged and intense throughout.

I’m a huge admirer of the already-iconic Kristen, Robert, and Taylor, and wanted to be the one to work with them as they face the challenges of bringing your beloved characters to the end of their journeys. Really, what could be more fun than that?

Please feel free to ask questions in the comments section below, and I’ll do my best to answer them. I hope that this will be the first of many occasions I’ll get to check in with you as we set to work bringing BREAKING DAWN to the screen. I am excited and grateful to have all of you alongside me for my TWILIGHT journey.

All best,
Bill Condon

P.S. Answer #1: No, there won’t be any musical numbers

Hi Bill! I don't have a question but i would like to say “can you please go back to the original colour contacts that Rob wore in Twilight”. Or if they are the same can you make them look better on film (they really look so bad in New Moon…too yellow and not golden brown like twilight). Also PLEASE don't put so much make up on Rob….he is beautiful without all the geisha girl make up caked on

    Thanks

Congratulations on being chosen to be the director for the final movies..I am sure you will do a fine job! I have to say, my favorite movie of the three was Christopher Weis's New Moon. I loved the color of it and the beautiful music by Alexander Desplat which I listen to quite often. I also loved the angst and drama of New Moon as I feel, the romance and chemistry between Bella and Edward is what all of us fans want to live vicariously through these two. I love what Catherine Hardwick was able to pull off with such a limited buget, she captured the romance and certainly picked the right cast! David Slade did an awesome job with the romance as well, with the proposal scene, my absolute favorite. I don't think the fans see it as a vampire love story as much as the love story with the obstacle to their love being vampirism. Also, it was great in Eclipse to have more of the Cullens in the story….I believe that is another hidden desire of the hearts who love this story. An intact family, with a strong and wise father figure is so NOT the norm in society today but is a deep need of the heart. This story speaks to the readers on so many levels..family, friendship, love willing to sacrifice for the loved one(Bella and Edward), ones ( the Cullens). There, I've said everything I have wanted to say….good luck….I know you will do your very best to finish this story to the delight of the fans worldwide!

please dont change the story line, this is a love story about edward and bella, whos love is so strong, please dont mess with love their destiny.

As far as the films go, I thought Catherine captured the chemistry and emotion of Twilight and that David Slade made a superior book to film translation. Some of that may have been a better script too. I thought Chris Weitz did a poor job directing (see cheesy slow motion shots and wood frolicking). As little cheesiness as possible please! I also hope that we get back to affirming the true romance in these books, which is Edward and Bella. Their chemistry needs to be palpable, especially as Bella becomes a vampire and Edward no longer has a reason to “hold back.”

I love your films, especially Gods and Monsters, and I know you will do Breaking Dawn justice! I look forward to seeing what new ideas you have to bring to the plate and to see how well you elevate the performances of the film's stars.
