‘Taxi’ actor Jeff Conaway has died at the age of 60 in Encion, California, nine days after he was put into a medically induced coma, his manager, Phil Brock, has confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter. His family, including his sisters, nieces and nephews, were with him after they decided to take him off life support.
Brock said Conaway, who rose to fame in the hit musical film ‘Grease,’ co-starring Johny Travolta was found unconscious May 11 from an apparent painkiller overdose. The manager added that the actor was suffering from the pneumonia at the time of the overdose.
In recent years, Conaway’s personal life was widely chronicled, including his struggle with substance abuse, on such VH1 reality shows as ‘Celebrity Fit Club’ and ‘Celebrity Rehab.’ He publicly said that the shows’ producers told him to focus on the drama in his life. “I think people are just enamored with other people’s problems because they have enough of their own, and they want to stop thinking about their own and think about somebody else’s for a while,” he told the Hollywood Reporter in 2009.
Brock also said that Conaway’s ‘Grease’ co-star Olivia Newton-John had offered to pay for him to go to rehab within the last month of his life. While the actor “wasn’t opposed to it…he wasn’t ready yet,” Brock added.
