Keeping up with Shockya’s new weekly mini-series, here are five more top celebrity Twitter accounts that the media-savvy public loves to “follow” on the popular social networking and microblogging website. It’s no secret that over the past few years, movie, television and music fans have become even more eager to “follow” their favorite celebrities on Twitter to see what they’re doing in their professional and personal lives, described in 140 characters or less.
While celebrities may join Twitter just to promote their upcoming projects or to keep their names in the media’s attention, this edition of Shockya’s Top Celebrity Tweeters features both film and television actors who not only discuss their acting, but also inform the world of the good they’re contributing to society. They also aren’t afraid to interact with their fans and show off their true personalities. Don’t forget to click on the Twitter icons to connect to the actors’ profiles, and to come back next week for the latest edition of this Shockya mini-series!
1. Lucy Hale-@lucyyhale
The current Teen Choice Award winner for Choice Summer TV Star: Female for her portrayal of Aria Montogmery on the hit ABC Family mystery teen drama ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ Lucy Hale is an up-and-coming star that deserves to be noticed. Much like her co-star Ashley Benson, whose Twitter account was mentioned on Perri Nemiroff’s Top Celebrity Tweeters, Hale doesn’t devote her entire page to just shamelessly promoting ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ which is set to premiere its second season on June 14, 2011. The actress proves that she’s down-to-earth by tweeting with her friends and that she’s not afraid of competition, as she writes about fellow actors, including Woody Harrelson and Stanley Tucci. Hale’s Twitter account definitely helps fans of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ get through the show’s hiatus.
2. Misha Collins-@mishacollins
Keeping with the television theme, but from an entirely different genre, is ‘Supernatural’ fan favorite Misha Collins, who is best known for his portrayal of the angel Castiel on the hit CW horror series. Collins tweets regularly to his over 190,000 followers, who he calls his “minions” and who voted his account as the Best of Twitter 2009. Collins is one the rare celebrities who isn’t constantly tweeting about his latest project, and instead shows how different he can be from his signature character. Unlike Castiel, Collins surprisingly knows how to crack jokes, and can make the most serious subject funny with his unique sense of humor. While it was disappointingly reported immediately after ‘Supernatural’s Season 6 finale that Collins won’t be returning as a series regular for Season 7, the show’s break-out star of the past three seasons shouldn’t be forgotten.
3. Sophia Bush-@SophiaBush
While brilliantly showing her acting talent in such movies as ‘Stay Alive,’ ‘John Tucker Must Die’ and ‘The Hitcher (2007),’ Sophia Bush mainly captured America’s attention in 2003 when she was cast as Brooke Davis in the hit young adult drama ‘One Tree Hill.’ Having been nominated for four Teen Choice Awards and directed two episodes since the show’s inception, Bush doesn’t solely focus on her love for the show that made her famous on her Twitter account. Instead, she also gives credit to her co-stars, including Paul Johansson, and also tweets about her favorite music. Bush’s humble appreciation that ‘One Tree Hill’ was renewed for a ninth season is just one reason to continue checking out her page.
4. Nathan Fillion-@NathanFillion
Nathan Fillion is another interesting, relatable comedic television actor who continuously alternates between tweeting about his current show, the ABC dramady ‘Castle,’ and the things he likes to do during his free time. Fillion also likes to poke fun at his ‘Castle’ co-stars, including Ruben Santiago-Hudson, and suggests amusing practical jokes to his followers. While season 3 of ‘Castle’ ended in a cliffhanger, Fillion’s funny interactions with his followers will allow the show’s fans to continue to get a daily dose of the outrageous actor.
5. Leonardo DiCaprio-@LeoDiCaprio
The ‘J. Edgar ‘actor has been wooing teen girls since he joined the last season of ‘Growing Pains’ 20 years ago. However, Leonardo DiCaprio, who often tweets several times a day, doesn’t like to focus on his upcoming projects; instead, the Academy Award-nominated star likes to focus on his mission to save the environment and protect wildlife. DiCaprio humbly tweets his gratitude to his followers who support his environmental missions. He proves that not all celebrities need to post about the latest Hollywood gossip or movies to reach over one million followers.
The best celebrities to follow are undoubtedly the ones who don’t only tweet about their upcoming and current projects; they also give their followers an insight into their everyday lives, interact with their fans and aren’t afraid to show off their real personalities. Looking for other celebrities to follow? Come back to Shockya next week, when movie editor Monique Jones gives her take on the best celebrity Twitter accounts.
