‘Sinister 2,’ the anticipated follow-up to the 2012 sleeper hit ‘Sinister,’ is set to begin production next week in Chicago. ‘Citadel’ helmer Ciaran Foy is set to direct the horror sequel, which Focus Features will release nationwide on Friday, August 21, 2015. The film’s production companies, Blumhouse Productions and Entertainment One (eOne), have also revealed that Shannyn Sossamon will headline the project.

Scott Derrickson, the director of ‘Sinister,’ returned to the series to co-write the script with C. Robert Cargill. The duo previously worked together to write the screenplay for the original movie.

Focus, Blumhouse and eOne have released the following details about the plot-line for ‘Sinister 2’:

In the aftermath of the shocking events in ‘Sinister,’ a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon of ‘Wayward Pines’) and her 9-year-old twin sons (real-life twins Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves in a rural house marked for death. James Ransone, who portrayed the concerned sheriff’s deputy in ‘Sinister,’ will be reprising his character in ‘Sinister 2.’

Jason Blum of Blumhouse, who produced the original installment, also returned to the franchise to produce ‘Sinister 2.’ He’s joined by Derrickson. Charles Layton and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones are joining eOne’s Xavier Marchand and Patrice Theroux to executive produce the new entry.

Blumhouse and eOne are also working with Focus on another anticipated horror sequel this summer. Focus is the U.S. distributor on ‘Insidious: Chapter 3,’ which is currently in production. The Leigh Whannell-directed sequel in the hit series is set to be released in theaters on May 29, 2015.
