Warner Bros. has announced release dates for a slew of upcoming projects, including the highly-anticipated big screen adaptation of DC Comics’ “Green Lantern”, which will hit theaters December 17th, 2010.

The story will follow test pilot Hal Jordan, who is selected by the alien Green Lantern Corps to become one of them after the death of one of their greatest members, Abin Sur. Hal is chosen for being “utterly honest and without fear”, and must uphold the oath of the Corps to “let no evil […] escape my sight” as he battles evil both on Earth as well as across the universe.

DC’s Green Lantern was first introduced in 1940, though chronologically as well as in the DC Universe there are several characters who utilize the name. The character, one of an interstellar police force that has thousands of members from various planets, uses a “power ring” to fly, shoot energy, and produce green “energy constructs” that can be shaped and used however the wearer can imagine it, controlled by their willpower and utter fearlessness and powered through a lantern-shaped “power battery”.

No casting decisions have been released, though Martin Campbell has been attached to direct the space-adventure epic.
