The Hollywood Reporter says that long-time visual effects supervisor Eric Brevig has signed on to direct the film adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon Yogi Bear.

Brevig, who recently directed Journey to the Center of the Earth under Warner Brothers, says Yogi Bear will be featured in 3-D using a combination of live action and CG similar to Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Yogi Bear will also be produced under the Warner Bros. name.

Brevig’s visual effects resume includes blockbusters such as The Day After Tomorrow, Pearl Harbor, Men in Black, Total Recall and The Abyss. He was nominated for two Oscars for Achievement in Visual Effects for Hook and Pearl Harbor and won a Special Achievement Award in 1992 for Total Recall.

Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia, who executive produced hit comedy series “That ’70s Show” and reality show “Kitchen Confidential” are writing the screenplay. The pair have previously written the screenplay for 2004’s Surviving Christmas, which starred Ben Affleck, James Gandolfini, Christina Applegate and Catherine O’Hara.

Sternin and Ventimilia’s latest project is Tooth Fairy, which stars Dwayne Johnson as a naughty hockey player who must serve a week as the tooth fairy in punishment for his bad deeds. It’s set to hit theaters on November 13th, 2009.
