According to /Film, Walt Disney Pictures has cast Alfred Molina in the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced retooling of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”. Nicolas Cage will star in a New York City-set modern take of the classic story from the well-known and critically-loved Disney film “Fantasia”. Jay Baruchel will also star as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, who gets into trouble when the broomstick he magically animates to complete his chores for him begins to run amok. Molina will be playing an evil sorcerer, and Teresa Palmer will play Baruchel’s love interest.

Jon Turteltaub reteams with Cage, who he directed in “National Treasure”, to direct the film. Production is rumored to star to shoot in New York City later this month. No release date has been set yet.

“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” was first made famous as an animated musical interpretation in 1940’s “Fantasia”, where it drew from the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe poem “Der Zauberlehrling”.
