Variety.com is reporting John Malkovich is joining the cast of “Secretariat,” the Randall Wallace-directed drama for Disney and Mayhem Pictures about the famous racehorse. Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray of Mayhem are producing.

Malkovich will play the former jockey turned trainer Lucien Laurin, who became the trainer of the 1973 Triple Crown-winning racehorse

The film will be focusing on, alongside the story of the horse’s rise to fame, the relationship between the horse and his owner Penny Chenery (Diane Lane), a housewife who takes over her ailing father’s horse farm though she knows next to nothing about horses.
