20th Century Fox has attached Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writing team behind the 2009 horror-comedy hit “Zombieland”, to pen the script for their planned “Deadpool” film, starring Ryan Reynolds.

Reynolds would be reprising his role as the “Merc with a Mouth” from Fox’s 2009 “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”. Created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza in 1991’s “New Mutants” for Marvel, the character is a gravel-voiced, heavily-scarred mercenary who wisecracks his way through life. Initially a villain, the character, who wields a variety of weapons and has artificial healing powers, has since evolved into more of an anti-hero. Deadpool is perhaps best known for being aware of his status as a fictional character, frequently breaking the fourth wall to address comic readers. Reynolds has confirmed that this in-joke would be a part of the upcoming film, something hinted at at the end of the “Wolverine” movie.

Lauren Shuler Donner is producing.
