More news in the “I, Alex Cross” department! Summit Entertainment has gotten the U.S. rights to the film, which stars Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, cementing the rights to the film brings Summit Chairman/CEO Rob Friedman back into the “Alex Cross” franchise; during his tenure at Paramount, the studio released 1997’s “Kiss the Girls” and 2001’s “Along Came a Spider”.

The film “I, Alex Cross” follows the titular detective solving the crime of the murder of his pregnant wife, whom he believes was killed by a serial rapist (Fox).

As discussed in other posts about this film, the main draw to this film is the fact that Perry is playing Alex Cross, who was played by Morgan Freeman in the previous films. Because most people know him from this “Madea” movies, the news of him playing a role such as this comes as a shock to the system.

You’ll get to see for yourself about whether Perry has the acting chops for such a role when the film comes out sometime in 2012.

What do you think? Do you think Perry’s got what it takes to fill Morgan Freeman’s shoes? What are your opinions about the film?
