“Star Trek” screenwriter Roberto Orci has stated that the sequel, “Star Trek: The Second”, will have the overarching theme of family, according to a story posted by CinemaBlend over the weekend.

Orci, who talked more about the film during the “Cowboys and Aliens” panel at WonderCon, said that he plans on being more daring with the sequel’s theme. “The first one had to be an origin story,” he said, “…[s]o to do that organically, you have to get each character in his or her place. Now, they’re all together from the beginning, and so now they’re all going to face I think a theme that is different and potentially more challenging than just they met and they’re…facing this force of nature in Nero. So the theme of their family is going to be something great to explore that you don’t get in the first movie.”

He also talked about how the second film will address some of the minor critiques the first film got, including how Kirk became captain so quickly. After saying he mulled over a scene in which a character confronts Kirk about becoming captain, Orci stated, “It’s a fun guessing game [reading and addressing the film’s critiques], and you do get to incorporate some of the complaints; you cannot just answer them, but voice them in the movie. I enjoy that–I enjoy seeing what people say, even if it’s super nasty.”

“Star Trek: The Second” will be in theaters June 29, 2012.
