New “Rock of Ages” news to report! Will Forte, famous for his “MacGruber” character from “Saturday Night Live,” has been signed to play in the film adaptation of “Rock of Ages.”

Forte will play a character that is not found in the theater version. The film-only character is Mitch Miley, a local news anchor somehow gets mixed-up in the overall story of rockers battling it out on Sunset Strip.

Forte joins a cast including Diego Gonzalez Boneta, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Tom Cruise, Malin Ackerman, Russel Brand and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The plot involves an up-and-coming rocker Drew Boley (Boneta) who is working on becoming famous while battling aging rocker Stacee Jaxx (Cruise) for the love of Sherrie Christian (Hough) a small-town girl with a dream.

Forte’s biggest movie was “MacGruber,” based around the skits he performed on “Saturday Night Live.” The film, which was a nod to the popular ’80s show “MacGuyver,” was poorly received by both critics and audiences, only garnering a critical percentage of 47% and an audience percentage of 33% on Rotten Tomatoes .
