For those who were concerned about Johnny Depp’s caked white makeup after viewing the first “first look” shot of Barnabas Collins, throw away your concerns (or, most of them, anyway).

Entertainment Weekly has the first look at the entire cast of “Dark Shadows,” the film adaptation of the popular 1960s-1970s gothic soap-opera directed by Tim Burton. Per usual with directors who have a stable of actors they love, Burton’s used tried-and-true Burton actors and actresses for this obviously offbeat and kooky film; aside from Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Lee and Helena Bonham Carter are in the film, along with newcomers to the Burton fold Jackie Earle Haley, Alice Cooper(!), Bella Heathcote, Eva Green, Chloë Moretz and Jonny Lee Miller. Check out the picture below.

I’ve only seen the first episode of “Dark Shadows” through YouTube, so I can’t really find much to complain about, but perhaps fans more hardcore than I am might find some things to pick apart. From where I’m standing, it looks like Burton maybe coming back to form here–the still gives the sense of quirky fun that people love from Burton’s films. And he and Depp are huge fans of the show, so I’m sure there was care taken in this production.

  1. The original Dark Shadows series ran for 5 years and then was remade for prime time running only one season with Ben Cross as Barnabas. Around the original run there were 2 full length feature films released, “House of Dark Shadows” and “Night of Dark Shadows”. So it would really make no sense to now make an exact clone of  Dark Shadows. That being said, fans do have a certain reverence to the original tone,  camp and character of the series. The challenge is then to create something which has a respect for these qualities while bringing something new to the table. If anyone can do it, it will be Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, both fans of the original.

    I look forward to seeing what they will create. To see the old and new casts side by side, look here;
