Firstly, before I get into the story, I’m not sure there really needs to be a prequel to “Pinocchio,” a story that has everything you need to know in one go. You learn the perils of telling fibs and pretending to be someone you’re not–you end up being part of a seedy puppet show and inside a whale. What will a prequel tell us that we don’t already know? Do we really have to see Geppetto wishing he had a son for the entire film?

In any case, we’ll see what a prequel could possibly be about, since Fox has decided to by a “Pinocchio” prequel for Shawn Levy’s production company 21 Laps, according to Deadline. Levy, who directed “Real Steel,” will also direct the prequel, called “The Three Misfortunes of Geppetto,” which will show Geppetto’s hard-knock life of misfortune, war, and adventure in order to be with his love, Julia Moon. According to the site, the film is supposed to remind viewers of “Big Fish” or “The Princess Bride,” giving a revisionist take on the classic tale, like so many films are doing today (“Snow White” revisionist films, Disney and Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” etc.).

Personally, I just don’t know. Seeing Geppetto’s life before Pinocchio just isn’t important to the story, in my opinion? Why see a “Pinocchio” movie if the title character isn’t in the film? Write what you think about this prequel in the comments section below.
