I’m not sure if anyone has been wanting a 3D-animated “Popeye” film. I’m not even sure if kids today know who Popeye is. But it’s being made, and now we have news of the screenwriters who are attached to the film.

According to CinemaBlend and The Hollywood Reporter, two screenwriters have been tapped to write the screenplay for the film. According to the site, writing duo Jay Scherick and David Ronn will write the screenplay for “Popeye.” These two have already adapted another cartoon obscure to younger audiences, “The Smurfs.”

“Scherick and Ronn have a remarkable talent in re-energizing beloved characters,” said Bob Osher, the president of Sony Pictures Digital Productions. “As they demonstrated with ‘The Smurfs,’ they embrace the iconic characteristics of these timeless characters and craft a story that really engages moviegoers today.”

Also, Michelle Raimo Kouyate, SPA president of production, said the two screenwriters’ take on “Popeye” has “just the right blend of comedy, adventure and heart–all the elements that made a great animated film.”

Basically, to me, it seems like another way for a studio to make some kind of franchise that some portion of the population knows about in order to have a built-in audience. But really, how many adults that remember the “Popeye” cartoons are going to shell out money to see a film about it? Isn’t the Robin Williams live-action film enough? But, what do you think about this movie? Give your assessment in the comments section.
