Many Americans are anime fans, so it’s no surprise that comedy troupe Box Seats would create a video spoofing popular manga and anime series, “Death Note.”

Ben Lepley, part of the troupe, brought the video to my attention. The troupe, which produces high production value web sketches, decided that “Death Note” would be a good anime to spoof because of its popularity–whenever an anime is popular, there’s always talk of an American movie series, something that a lot of American fans actually dread (i.e. the “Akira” fiasco).

“One of our more successful projects is a parody trailer for Death Note, Deathasketch, spoofing the inevitable Americanized WB remake,” he said. “We’ve taken it to Anime Expo and Pacific Media Expo, and it’s gotten a lot of traction from film geeks and anime fans.”

You can view the video below the post as well as on YouTube. After seeing it myself, I can say that the trailer is scarily accurate. I’m a fan of the “Death Note” manga, and it was a lot of fun seeing moments from the manga acted out in the spoof. Of course, the spoofing part comes from the fact that Light is using an Etch-a-Sketch instead of a notebook, possibly mirroring some stupid thing an executive might want to add to an Americanized version of “Death Note.” Overall, quality work.
