Last Sunday, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard talked with HitFix’s Drew McWeeny for “The Cabin in the Woods” SXSW live chat. During the chat, both Whedon and Goddard talked about how their affinity for horror made them want to write a horror movie they would want to see. For them, they wanted to truly celebrate horror.

One thing they wanted to make sure the film had was a sense of logic. “…[W]e would always say, ‘Why would they do that?'” said Whedon. “We have a real explanation of ‘Why would they do that.'” Whedon said that by writing well-rounded characters in a cohesive story, they could “put [the characters] through the paces of a horror movie’ but still allow them to retain. their dignity and integrity.

This ability to have the characters scared to death while telling a good story creates one of the things Whedon said he loves about the genre. “You’re rooting for two kinds of things at the same time, and that’s something I’ve never understood about horror and something I really love about it,” he said.

The official synopsis of the film is:

“Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen.

If you think you know this story, think again. From fan favorites Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard comes THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, a mind blowing horror film that turns the genre inside out.

Produced by Whedon and directed by Goddard from a script by both, the film stars Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchinson, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford.”
