Chloe Moretz and Haley Bennett are the leading contenders to play the title role in director Kimberly Peirce’s new remake of ‘Carrie,’ Slashfilm is reporting. The news of the potential casting of the adolescent telekinetic Carrie comes after Peirce also considered Dakota Fanning, Emily Browning, Bella Heathcote and Lily Collins. ‘The Descendants’ Shailene Woodley was actually offered the role, but eventually passed on the job.

The young actresses may also be considered to play some of Carrie’s tormenting classmates. If they’re cast, they may appear alongside either Jodie Foster or Julianne Moore, who are being considered to play Carrie’s fundamentalist and sexually terrified mother Margaret. The character was played by Piper Laurie in Brian De Palma’s hit 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s first novel. She starred alongside Sissy Spacek, who starred as the title character.
