You think you know what to expect from “VHS 2” having seen the first film? Think again. Don’t believe me? It says it right there in the film’s new red band trailer – “Leaps and bounds beyond its predecessor” – courtesy of yours truly.
Veterans Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard return and are joined by “VHS” newcomers Jason Eisener, Gareth Evans, Timo Tjahjanto, Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale to deliver five gruesome and twisted yet highly enjoyable tales of found footage horror. “VHS 2” isn’t just a step above the first film or even a top genre release of 2013; it’s one of the best films of the year, period. It’s tough to get a taste of what a horror anthology is all about narrative-wise via a trailer, but in the case of “VHS 2” it’s almost entirely unnecessary anyway. A quick overview of the wraparound component serves as the ideal dose of exposition just before burying you in a barrage of exceptionally vicious imagery, the large majority of which is so intense, the trailer is bound to leave a mark.
