KiKA von ARD und ZDF is now available for free on FilmOn. KiKA (the official title being Der KinderKAnal von ARD und ZDF) is a German children’s channel based in Erfurt, Germany. As you can infer from the title, it’s a channel created by the national public television channels ARD and ARD’s broadcasters–HR, BR, NDR, MDR, Radio Bremen, RBB, SWR, WDR, Saarländischer Rundfunk and ZDF.

KiKA is not only free to the public, but it’s also commercial free. The station is geared towards children aged 3 to 13. This sounds like a regular children’s channel, until you get to the awesome mascot, Bernd das Brot. He’s a depressed, fatalistic, bad-tempered sandwich bread loaf. He himself states that he belongs to the species “Homo Brotus Depressivus.” Apparently, Bernd has become a Germanic cult figure with both children and adults alike. As to why a depressed loaf of bread is a children’s station mascot, I don’t know. But if you want to see why, check out the channel below the post or at FilmOn.

FilmOn offers more children’s channels as well as networks focusing on hard news, entertainment news and gossip, music, movies and more. What do you think about KiKA? Give your opinions in the comments section below.
