The biggest problem some people have with “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the “mommy porn” book by E.L. James about a young woman who gets sucked into a hardcore BDSM relationship with a powerful businessman, is that the relationship itself is misogynistic. But, according to Jamie Dornan, who plays said businessman Christian Grey, the story is a little more complicated than that.

Dornan said to Elle UK that he thinks the hardcore sex elements of the book have been overplayed. “The love story is more important than the BDSM aspect. I mean, if we are going to tell a love story, you know, it can’t just be what happens in the Red Room, that’s not a film,” he said. “There’s so much more going on than that.”

He went on to say that there are less women in the submissive role than people think. “I can understand why people say tying a woman up and spanking her is misogynisitc,” he said. “But actually, more men are submissives than women. Very powerful men. It’s a far bigger scene than I imagined: in pretty much any city in the world that you could name, people want to get spanked with a paddle with studs on it.”

However, if people think Dornan fully endorses his character’s actions, think again. In another part of the interview, Dornan discusses visiting a sex dungeon for research. “…[G]oing back to my wife and newborn baby afterwards…I had a long shower before touching either of them.”
