Many fans (and some movie news outlets, for that matter) have long since established in their minds that Christoph Waltz has to be playing Blofeld in the upcoming James Bond movie, “Spectre.” However, Waltz himself states that this idea couldn’t be further from the truth.

Waltz has stated that he’s not playing Blofeld in the upcoming film. In fact, he seems a little irritated by the suggestion. “That rumor started on the internet and the internet is a pest,” he told GQ Magazine UK. “The name of my character is Franz Oberhauser.”

Of course, everyone is on tenterhooks particularly because of what happened with “Star Trek Into Darkness.” Benedict Cumberbatch had sworn up and down that he wasn’t playing Khan, but it turned out he was playing Khan, who was going by a different name. Also, the idea of Waltz as Blofeld only makes too much sense in fans’ minds. Of course, Waltz’s got the accent already, but Waltz’s villains are now some of film’s most iconic characters. It would only make too much sense for Waltz to play a mastermind bent on destroying Bond.

But, to play Devil’s Advocate and to play to Waltz’s critique of the internet, the fans did start this rumor and built it up until people began viewing it as fact. Perhaps he’s not actually playing Blofeld at all. He could be telling us the truth. But we’ll see once “Spectre” is released Nov. 6.
